Brunello di Montalcino

Download

From a single plot among the vineyards of Podere Casisano, in one of the highest and best-quality positions in the hills to the south-east of Montalcino, Colombaiolo combines structure, elegance and harmony.

Vineyard

From specially selected grapes from the finest plot of the Colombaiolo vineyard, one of the highest in the Denomination. The Cordon Spur-trained vines have a density of 5,000 plants per hectare, on soil that is rich in galestro (schistous clay) with insertions of sandstone.

Winemaking

Fermentation at a controlled temperature of 28-30 degree celcius in 70hl wooden vats for 20-25 days, with pumping over daily and long rack and return. Maturation for 4 years; first year in tonneaux of first-pass and the other three years in 19 and 25 hl Slavonian oak casks, followed by bottle-aging for at least 6 months.

Vintage

Rainy winter with average temperatures. Fresh mild spring, with a significant lowering of the temperature in the second half of April and scare rain also during summer, the cool nights in July partially compensated for the water shortage. The rain came at the beginning of September and in combination with mild temperatures, avoided the risk of a too-accelerated final ripening of the grapes, allowing for balanced aromas. Sunny October created ideal conditions for the grape harvest. The harvested grapes showed a remarkable complexity in aromas and tannins elegant and excellent natural acidity.

Tasting Note

A deep, intense ruby with tinges of garnet, it offers a fine, complex nose, in which the fruit combines with a sweet spiciness deriving from its long aging. On the palate it is austere, with ripe, velvety tannins producing an excellent balance between great structure and elegance. The finish is fresh and harmonious.

Reviews

"Cedar and spice"

Decanter - January 9, 2024

"With a brick-edged hue and oxidative nuances, Colombaiolo initially presents as fully mature yet youthful wood-driven aromas of cedar and spice waft atop. There is freshness on the mid-palate as concentrated acidity penetrates ripe blackberry flavours." - M.M.

"Dynamic palate"

Wine Enthusiast - January 9, 2024

"After initial savory notes, the nose is like a slice of cake, with sweeter vanilla, cardamom, cherry and cranberry aromas. The tangy fruitiness continues onto a lithe, dynamic palate, while the tannins are structured yet malleable, and the acidity is like great service—present but never intrusive." - D.C 9/23

"Black raspberry, baked earth"

Jeb Dunnuck - January 9, 2024

"The 2017 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva offers more substance, with stewed black cherry, medicinal herbs, and dried leather. It is medium to full-bodied on the palate, with more black cherry, black raspberry fruit, baked earth, and tea leaf, followed by rich mineral notes on the finish and a warming feel." - A.F 9/23

"Dried cherries and prunes"

James Suckling - January 9, 2024

"This is a rich and plummy Brunello with cedar and sandalwood, sweet spices, dried cherries and prunes on the nose. Full-bodied with dense, ripe tannins. Lingering sweet, dried fruit. From organically grown grapes" - J.S 9/23
