Divine Wine: French Winemaker Stays True to Family Roots

The Chicago Sun Times featured Guigal in a dedicated story within the print edition of the newspaper. Wine writer Peter Hoyne gave readers an overview of the brand heritage, beginning with Etienne Guigal’s establishment of E. Guigal in 1945 and highlighting both Marcel and Philippe for their roles and accomplishments as brand leaders. Peter explained that the authenticity of today’s Guigal wines can be traced back Philippe’s “tireless work ethic” and attention to detail. In addition to sharing the news of the family’s recent Chateau de Nalys acquisition, Peter included tasting notes on other Guigal wines he’s recently re-sampled, including the 2017 Condrieu, 2015 Cotes du Rhone, and 2015 Cote-Rotie. Condrieu

Condrieu is the ancestral home of the Viognier vine and is the source of one of the world's most exotic white wines. In the mid-20th century, only 20 acres of Viognier remained in Condrieu, leaving the grape and the appellation in serious jeopardy. Guigal was instrumental in bringing this appellation back from near extinction, and today supplements the grapes from their own vineyards with grapes purchased from numerous small growers, ultimately vinifying nearly one-third of the entire appellation.
